How Look Magazine Changed America: Journalist and author Andrew Yarrow discusses his forthcoming book, a retrospective about the underrated Look Magazine with cohosts Richard Levick of LEVICK and Dr. George T. French, Jr., President of Clark Atlanta University. Look Magazine, which last published in 1971, is often thought of as the poorer competitor to Life magazine, yet it was far more heroic and courageous in its coverage than most or all traditional magazines, covering birth control in the 1930s; first calling out “white nationalists” 75 years before the phrase became more commonplace; hired the first full time African American journalist long before other predominantly White publications; was the publication Jackie Robinson chose to announce his retirement; and covered with journalists and photo journalists the Civil Rights movement in a way most publications shied away from.
