With each new day, the metaphors of warfare become ever more appropriate for describing British Petroleum's ordeal. The company is in a multi-front engagement driven by grueling battles in the Court of Public Opinion and on Capitol Hill as well as in the Gulf of Mexico itself. Meanwhile, massive new battles loom on the litigation front. As in total war, fresh setbacks arise with disheartening regularity, threatening to undo any hope that the catastrophe will be resolved without exhausting the patience and resources of the entire country.
Events that may prove decisive, if not historical, break even as we write. This weekend, for example, pressures mounted for the firing of Chief Executive Officer Tony Hayward even as President Barack Obama jockeyed for some politically advantageous positioning.
